WCNB Description:

"By 6:00 A.M., Lyon's infantrymen reached this area along the northern crest of what would later be known as Bloody Hill. Here the Southern resistance stiffened. To your right, from a wooded hill across Wilson's Creek, Captain William Woodruff observed 'a great commotion.' His Pulaski Arkansas Battery of four cannons opened fire on the advancing Federals. Their sweeping spherical case and shellfire slowed the Union advance, thus allowing fellow Southerners the crucial time needed to field an effective defense. Despite Totten's efforts to silence them, Woodruff's guns continued to hamper Union activities throughout the battle. Only three months earlier, ironically, Woodruff had trained under Totten at the Little Rock Arsenal. Totten had been 'very popular with the people' of Little Rock and 'Great hopes had been entertained that Totten would join the Southern cause.' But such hopes, and much more would die as the two armies faced off on both sides of Wilson's Creek."
