WCNB Description:
"Over 80% of the 1818 men wounded during the Battle of Wilson's Creek fell on Bloody Hill. Because neither side was prepared to deal with so much suffering, many of the wounded waited hours for any medical care. Even worse, the care available to them was, by today's standards, crude and harmful. Amputations were frightfully common because of the number and types of injuries. Further, since nothing was known of bacteria, surgeons rinsed their instruments in buckets of bloody water rather than sterilizing them. Such practices too often led to infection, additional amputation and painful death. No wonder soldiers came to fear medical treatment more than the dangers of battle."
